Dabke Fusion is a workshop inspired by the vibrant folk dancing of the Levant region; it’s particularly focused on the Lebanese dabke of the Beqaa Valley. During the workshop the artist will explore the concepts of weight and lightness related to movement, emphasizing strength, suppleness, angles and curves through jumps, bounces, and agitation.

Details

Duration: 3 hours of work structured in three parts:

  1. Warm-up: a dynamic warm-up session, including stretching and the use of dabke-inspired elements such as bounces, shakes and jumps to prepare the body.
  2. Learning basic steps and rotations: Participants will learn the basic steps of the dabke dance of the Bekaa Plains.
  3. Improvisation in the dabke circle: The final part of the workshop focuses on applying the learned steps and movements in an improvisational context. Participants will experience the qualities of traditional dance and enjoy interactive improvisation in the dabke circle, accompanied by traditional Lebanese music.

Bassam Abou Diab

He attended the Lebanese university and he’s both a contemporary and a folk dancer. He has danced for several years in the company of Lebanese choreographer Omar Rajeh. Being selected for the Takween project, both in 2010 and 2011, he worked with choreographers such as Marcel Leemann, Emilyn Claid, Thierry Smith, Luc Dunberry, Marco Cantalupo, Anani Dodji Sanouvi, Radhouane El Meddeb, Jens Bjerregard, Kristina De Chatelle, Damien Jalet and Francesco Scavetta. He eventually started his career as choreographer and presented his works in Lebanon (Moultaqua Leymoun Platform) and in Europe. In 2017 he took part in the first edition of the Italian project Focus Young Arab Choreographers. Bassam has also performed in theatrical shows and worked with directors such as Ossama Halal, Rouaida al Ghali, Badih Abou Chakra e Malek Andary.
