What moves the breath between things: that perspiration, that glimmer between taking and giving, between stealing pieces of the world and releasing breath to the world in pieces?

Breathing room places breathing at the centre of Salvo Lombardo’s research. The project springs from the desire and necessity of the artist for a wider space-time, a passage into the productive acceleration to “catch your breath”, in the wake of the reflection about “cure” as a possibility of creating some “other places” carried forward by Lavanderia a Vapore, of which Salvo Lombardo is an associated artist. Breathing room opens to the audience by way of a guided practice which is orientated by a series of requests and suggestions. Every beginning of a work is an unreproduceable unit/unicum based on an invitation to an artist coming from the dance and performance world to inhabit this defined space relationship together with the audience, and by activating a performance which happens in real time, without rehearsals, nor previews, nor future shows. For Fuori Programma the guest artist will be Marta Ciappina. The invitation is thus substantiated as an act of complicity and as a radical expression of being in the here and now and as an opportunity to question, while breathing, the principles of authority and individual power that underlie the productive system of art: an invitation to be taken, an attitude to listening, an exercise in vulnerability and relationship that can suggest an act of mutual care.

Salvo Lombardo is a performer, choreographer, multimedia director and a person who takes care of performance projects. He is director of Chiasma (a dance production organisation recognised by Mic). His works have participated in numerous festivals, theatres, museums and independent spaces in Italy and abroad. From 2012 to 2015 he was director and actor for the Clinica Mammut. From 2015 to 2016 he was resident choreographer at the Anghiari Dance Hub. In 2017 he was guest choreographer for Aura Dance Theatre of Kaunas (LIT). From 2016 to 2020 he closely collaborated as choreographer with the Festival Fabbrica Europa. In 2017-2018 he was associate artist in the East West Festival. In 2018 he worked with the project L’esemplare capovolto:the creation of the show Excelsior in coproduction, among others, with the Théâtre National de Chaillot and the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, Romaeuropa Festival and the show AMOЯ (2021) created for and with Fattoria Vittadini in coproduction with MILANoLTRE with the support of Teatro di Roma. The project Opacity was selected at NID - New Italian Dance Platform. Since 2019 he is co-curator with Viviana Gravano and Giulia Grechi of Resurface Festival in Rome: a multidisciplinary festival focused on the relations between colonial imagery and contemporary representations. Since 2021 he has been an artist associated with the Lavanderia a Vapore. In 2021 he was curator of Interactions in Rome, an exhibition based on the exchange of practices between dancemakers and the audience.

Chiasma

The Chiasma Cultural Association, founded in 2017 and directed by Salvo Lombardo, is based in Rome and operates in the field of contemporary visual and performing arts through a series of national and international activities and initiatives, with an offer able to from the artistic production to the planning of cultural events and exhibitions, to the didactic activity. Since 2018 Chiasma has been recognized and financed by the MIC as a dance production body. In addition to the works of Salvo Lombardo, Chiasma supports and accompanies the processes and productions of Daria Greco, Fabritia D'Intino, Marta Olivieri, Valentina Pagliarani. From 2019 to 2021 Chiasma organized and promoted, in collaboration with Attitudes_Spazio alle Arti and Roots Agency_cura of conteporary arts, the Resurface_Festival di sguardi postcoloniali in Rome, a multidisciplinary festival focused on decolonial practices and focused on the relationships between colonial imaginaries and contemporary representations. Since 2020 he has been among the founding bodies of Ostudio in Rome, an independent space of artistic cohabitation and interdisciplinary research. In 2021 he organized the review Interactions_practices of reciprocity: a project focused on sharing participatory practices with heterogeneous audiences and communities.
